Her Heartstone: A Folk Tale
Coming Spring 2025!
As some of you may know, I wrote a Folk Tale-ish story last year titled, Her Heartstone.
For the last few months, I've been editing the story and working with an extraordinary artist, Michael Kucharski, to bring the vision of the story in my imagination onto the page... and make it a real-live book.
As the project progresses, I'll share some of the outstanding illustrations that Michael creates.
Our plan is to release the book this Spring... and I am Over-The-Moon THRILLED!
Bookmark this page! More of this exciting project will be revealed soon!!

The Writing Update for 2025... and Beyond!
As many of you know, Drake and I have a major lifetime goal of writing one book in each of the 35 major genres. Recently, a writer friend sent us a list that identified 95 major genres. The literary world is expanding, but Drake and I aren't getting any younger! So, we're sticking with 35 for now, and if someday we surpass that number, well, all the better. 😁 Also, Drake wants to make it quite clear that he refuses to apologize for repeating genres... he enjoys writing short stories and children's books, and he has a deep passion for guiding other writers along on their journey. Although he has admitted that after the work it's taking to complete just one fiction series, he's not going to try to write more than one. But, he might change his mind some day. It's a duck's prerogative to follow whatever current he discovers, after all.
It's a new year, and what would a new year be without a white board filled with literary pursuits? Drake and I have some lofty goals for 2025... Yet we believe that with consistent writing time and diligence... and perhaps a bit of gentle nudging from our devoted Street Team, we can and will accomplish everything we set out to do!
Like a tiny duckling paddling around a pond, snatching up every little bug we can find, we've spent a great deal of time over the past year drafting a bunch of new projects. The end result is that we have MANY unfinished vying for attention. It's difficult for Drake to reign in the ideas when they come to him so quickly. We hate to lose any of them, so we tend to paddle around a lot. But this year... this year, our goal is to FINISH some things before we move forward with some others.
So, with the understanding that you, our generously supportive Literary Street Team will hold us gently accountable... here are our Top Five Writing Goals for the coming year:
1. Publish Tears Remember: a Michigan Paranormal novel. We're so close to finishing this one. It's been a long adventure, nearly three years in the making, but we're very close now. The pages are with our editor, and we expect to have everything ready to go by our birthday in June. This book has been a remarkable writing journey, and we've enjoyed writing every scene and chapter... but we want to make sure it's absolutely perfect, so we're being careful through the editing phase. We appreciate your patience in waiting for it's release.
2. Finish Splinters: a Western Novel. This book is about 70% complete. There are a few key scenes we need to flesh out, and a bit of dialogue to add... but it's so close, we can almost smell it! So, this one is first on our list to complete. The goal is to have it released in Autumn, depending on how focused we can keep Drake's little flippers. We know there is at least one enthusiastic reader out there who has been very patient waiting almost three years for this one's release, and we promise that this is a priority for 2025!
3. Publish Her Heartstone: a Folk Tale. This story was written as a birthday gift for a dear friend, who suggested that we publish it so more readers could enjoy it. So, that's exactly what we're doing. We're in conversation with an illustrator who will bring a different style to this story. Our hope is that it will be released by Thanksgiving time... just in time for the holidays. But we know how important it is to give artists time and space to work their magic, so we're not making any promises. This story is very precious to us, and we want it to honor it's original reader properly. It'll hatch when it's ready. We'll keep you updated.
4. Complete Anonymous: A Suspense Crime novella. If there is time left in the year, and a small modicum of energy left in Drake's little wings before he flies to New Zeeland for the winter, we will work on getting this book done. It is written entirely in 2nd Person POV. As you can imagine, writing an entire story in this style is a real challenge. And, not being a duck who does anything halfway, Drake has decided that this story must have five main characters, yet still keep the book written entirely in 2nd POV! Yes, Drake can be a little ambitious sometimes, but I don't mind. Stretching our craft is how we get better. Whether or not we're able to finish this one before November remains to be seen... only time will tell.
Aside from all that, we're also going to be going on adventures out to fairs and festivals... to as many places as we can squeeze in this spring, summer, and autumn. Last year, we only went to two events, and we really missed meeting everyone. So this year, we'll be out on the road, taking time to visit with readers and writers. We've attended two so far, and we've got thirteen more events on the calendar! Visit our Event Calendar to discover where we'll be next!

Horizon Projects
These are all working titles...
subject to change as the feathers fly.
What's on the horizon? Well, here's a list of projects we will work on after our top five goals have been met. Keep in mind that Drake has also quacked a strong interest in writing another collection of short stories this year, too... so because I'm at the mercy of a headstrong bundle of feathers and flippers... nothing is EVER written in stone until it's published!
~The Last Strand (a science fiction novel) This one is a bit challenging because in the five years that it's been in development, Drake has changed his mind about the POV and the Climax... and he has new ideas for technology... so... at this point, we have absolutely no guesses on when it'll be finished.
~American Plague (a four-book political thriller series) It's possible book one of this series might come out this year... but more likely, in the Spring of next year. Although Drake has had some really good ideas for this project lately, it's a little complex to write a series (who knew?) so we're working to make sure all the transitions are what's needed for the following three books before publishing the first one.
~The Crimson Key (a swashbuckler fantasy novel) This one has a synopsis, but not much more than that. We need to build out the plot outline and work on character maps before we can even think about the actual writing part. However, the idea of writing about pirates, and adding his own little twist is exciting to Drake. If you're curious... a sneak preview is hidden inside our romance novel,
A Tryst of Fate.
~Hot Cocoa (a collection of anecdotal essays) It turns out that after writing fiction for so many years, flipping his tail feathers around to write essay is more challenging for Drake than he anticipated. We don't want it to be a dull read, so we're taking our time with this one. We're hoping that it turns out to be on the more humorous side, and that takes a bit of time... unless you're Kristoffer Gair!
~Take The Reins (a young adult mystery novel) This project is one that's been a curiosity for Drake since winter 2023, when a friend posed an interesting question about young people solving mysteries, without the end result sounding too much like an after-school special or an episode of Scooby-Doo (not that there's anything wrong with either of those things). We have a synopsis and a general idea of the track for this story... but it'll need more developmental time, and a really solid outline before we can even consider when it might see the festival circuit. And... Drake tells me this one may require travel and research, so there may be a southern horse farm and boarding school in our future.
~The Passionate Plotter Guidebooks (Indie Author guidebook series) We still have four more to write in this series, and we expect the entire series will be finished by 2027, or before. Non-fiction is kind of like kelp to Drake. It's the bill cleanser in between fiction projects. We've got all the material from over ten years of teaching creative writing workshops... we just need to regurgitate it into a digestible format for writers.
~Chloe Chimpanzee's Clutter (a children's picture book; book three in the Smart Ears Safari Club series) Right now, this book doesn't have a target date, but we'll keep you posted. It turns out writing about a chimp with ADHD and selective listening is more difficult than we imagined it would be.
-Sealing Wax: (an epistolary novel). Drake and I have been playing with this idea for a while, but it's not something that's completely taken shape yet. At this point, it's still just ripples in the pond. In this genre, the story is told by letters written between characters; usually just two; but you know Drake, he can't make anything simple. We're not sure yet where this is headed... but Drake LOVES the cover art. Sometimes, he can be tremendously inspired by a visual hanging about... you never can tell with ducks.
~The Scribe's Apprentice (a historical-fiction novel) If any of you have tried writing or reading this genre, you know how complex it can be. So Much Research! We have what we think is a great synopsis for a retelling of the myth behind the lost Library of Alexandria... But, oh my gosh, the amount of work involved is astounding. For those of you who brave writing in this genre, you have our deepest respect. Don't expect this one out into the wilds anytime soon, but know that it's definitely a thing, and it'll happen... eventually.
~ The Trial of Snow White (a fractured fairytale). This project began as one of Drake's short stories, and since, it has morphed into a full-blown novel; partly because some readers asked for "the rest of it" and partly because a fun idea came to us one night last winter when Drake checked in from New Zeeland. So, we've got the synopsis, plot outline, character maps, and about 25% of the story written... now we just need to finish it. It might be released sometime in 2026... we'll see.
So yeah, it's a lot, but Drake and I enjoy writing and the wonderment that comes with storytelling. We can't imagine doing anything else with our free time... except perhaps reading, drinking cocoa, and sleeping. As hobbies go, sleeping is a big hit with Drake!
Thank You To Our Tribe!

Tremendous gratitude flies out on the wind to Andrew Allen Smith, Brother Mark Love, Marianne Wieland, Kristoffer Gair, Mandy Jo, Amy Klco, Heather Ashle, Jules Nelson, and Deborah Reed for their continuous kindness and support of our writing journey. ❤️
Drake quacks his special appreciation to Caroline Topperman, one of the few humans in this world who speaks directly WITH him rather than about him. In fact, he loves her so much, he's considering going to Toronto this winter, instead of New Zeeland. I know Caroline will welcome him warmly. 🦆
And of course, we couldn't do any of this without our amazing editor, Kalli Connor! She and Drake have a special relationship, and she treats our writing as precious as her own. We will never be able to thank her enough for all she's done for our writing career... so we hope the money we pay her makes up for it in some small way. 😉
If you have the time, please visit these wonderful writers at their websites (the links in green). Their creativity is a gift of wonderment, and the kindness of their souls is beyond exceptional.
